How to back up existing program data onto the APOS (Not PCProg) and how to restore it?

Backing Up Program Data

In GoPOS, there are three ways to backup the program, two of which backs up the program, transaction data, and reports data, while the other only backs up the program. The three backup methods in GoPOS are located at the Home Screen > Menu > Settings.

The three backup functions are:

  • Backup
  • Export Data
  • Program Backup

Backup function will backup the program, transaction data, and reports data to the internal SD card installed in the APOS. We highly recommend you train your customer to perform this function when they are doing their reports, whether it’s daily or weekly basis.

Export Data function is the same function as doing the Backup function, except it allows you to save the backup file onto a USB device drive. The backup file produced is ‘backup.opos’ which is the same file produced when performing the Backup function. The Export Data function is needed when requested from us if you are in need of troubleshooting the system.

Program Backup function only backs up the program, as the name implies. When performing this function, it will allow you to save into either the internal storage or a USB device drive. However, the file name produced is a bit different, which by default is named ‘gopos-pbackup.op’. It is recommended to perform this backup as well on a monthly basis, typically alongside a monthly report. This backup is also performed when the GoPOS software is programmed and ready to go live at your client site, and is typically needed when you are resetting all the counters back to zero after testing which leads to performing a Program Restore.

Restoring Program Data

For restoring the backup data, there are only two functions located in Home Screen > Menu > Settings, which are:

  • Restore
  • Program Restore

Restore function will restore the ‘backup.opos’ file from which the Backup function has produced from the internal SD card. Depending on how many PLUs are in the program, and the number of reports that was backed up, it will take a moment to restore the backup until prompted by the GoPOS software that the restore was successful.

Program Restore function will restore the gopos-pbackup.op file that was produced when the Program Backup function was performed. When selecting Program Restore, a window will pop up stating “This action will clear all sales and programming data and restore the initial programming” followed by two options:

  • Clear sales data and counters
  • Restore license file

NOTE: You can ONLY select 1 of those options. Here are the following details for each.

Clear sales data and counters is used when you want to clear out test and/or training data in the software, which will reset all the counters to zero (transaction records, reports counters, etc.), which will allow you to start with a fresh database. As a warning, if you choose this option, this will permanently remove any sales data. Please ensure that you have a program backup file previously mentioned before clearing sales data and counters.

Restore license file allows you to restore the license file contained in the program backup. This should be done if the program backup was generated with the same APOS. If you are restoring a program backup from another APOS, do not enable this option.
